Perspective.

(Inspired by this thread)

Warnings: Possible triggers. Some mention of disturbing crimes, some of child abuse and its aftermath. Nothing graphic.

He's someone who does that.

Usually it's a demon enemy, but very often it's someone of mortal race, or even immortal who is in league with demons. Someone who may have been given powers, or not. Someone who murders, rapes and abuses. Someone who has tipped the balance to great enough degree for heaven to intervene.

Phoenix receives his orders, and is sent where he needs to go. He takes out the trash. Eliminates the vermin.

Sometimes, he enjoys it. The hunt. The capture. The kill. It heats his blood, thrills him. Which makes some kind of evolutionary sense. The kind of angel who would fall apart over the things Phoenix has to do, wouldn't last long.

After seeing Alec, Phoenix sits alone a while tinkering with his phone.  There's always another perspective. He isn't Vahl's Beta for nothing. It's all down to perception.  All Phoenix has seen has been from the perspective of Vahl, Alec or that guy Vahl fucked up. He curses himself for being a dozy twat and picks up the thread of his own perspective. Those who are on the receiving end of evil.

The people he saves. People he fights for.

It takes him a few days to watch the victims of the man whose mind Vahl butchered, so he uses his temporal device, so that nobody notices his absence. He seeks them all out. Not just the abuse victims, but the parents and families too, and the relatives of the ones that took their own lives.  It's appalling. So many broken lives. Ruined children. Pain. Misery. Several dozen undeserved life sentences. And now he can't find any mercy inside himself for that fucked-up schoolteacher who's name he still doesn’t know. And now doesn't care to.

Phoenix seldom prays, but today he sits inside a pretty little country church and does just that.

...He could be like me... He offers up silently to the Office.

...Indeed he could... comes the response, directly from the office of one of the archangels. ...Your brief is clear... save him... or condemn him... we offer you that choice...

Because there’s always a choice.

And he's a dark angel.

For some time, in the churchyard, Phoenix calls around his contacts, speaks to Sauriel, pulls together some information.  Then he writes a note:

“Half-demon running a prostitution racket out of Eastern Europe. Has evaded Earth authorities for fifteen years. Abduction. Rape. Murder. Enslavement. Human trafficking.

Name... (given)

Location... (given)

Call it a welcome home gift. Use it only when you need to.

Your dark angel.”

He marks out an angelic rune on the paper and burns the note, watching the paper blacken and curl with an engrossed fascination in the flames. When Vahl arrives back on Earth, and he will, the note will find him, just as Ylaia's cosmic message did when Vahl received his talismanic tattoo.

The angel's blood sings. His skin tingles. He's only ever in touch with what he truly is when he sails this close to the edge. So close he could almost, but doesn’t quite.

Fall.
